Hispanic Heritage Month 2016 Essay

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott announced the winners of the 2016 Hispanic Heritage Month student and teacher contest. During the month of September, Florida celebrated the contributions Hispanic Heritage leaders, educators and students continue to make on Florida and our nation. The student contests focused on the theme “Honoring Hispanic American Heroes.”

Three outstanding Hispanic educators were recognized with the Excellence in Education Award. The teachers were nominated by students and peers, and each received $1,500 provided by Volunteer Florida. Excellence in Education award winners are:

  • Rossana Chiarella – Palm Springs North Elementary
  • Carla Ford – St. Luke’s Lutheran School
  • Mirelys “Mindy” Goode – Pine Ridge High School

Three student essay-contest winners were recognized – one elementary, one middle-school, and one high school student – and received a four-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. Student essay contest winners are:

  • Ailanie Sanchez – San Jose Catholic School
  • Madilynn Vidal – Southwood Middle School
  • Christian Ramos – Manatee School for the Arts

Three student art-contest winners were also awarded $250 for their contributions. Student art contest winners are:

  • Karla Angelina Valencia-Gonzalez (K-1) – John Walker Elementary School
  • Victoria Grace Sanchez (2-3) – St. Theresa School
  • Abraham Cadaval (2-3) – Coral Reef Elementary
