Homeworks Azabu Juban Tokyo Tower

The Hiroo & Azabu-Juban area houses the majority of Tokyo’s expat community and, if you drop by, you’ll see why many international families choose to live in the area.
It has a very international vibe and is extremely English friendly.  If mixing it up with something touristy you could wander over while sightseeing in Roppongi. (This is my post on Roppongi with Kids.)  Change & Feeding spots at the bottom of the post.

*In terms of location and access: please keep in mind that Hiroo and Azabu-Juban are on either side of a big hill so it’s best to explore the area separately and not wander back and forth.  Both areas are easily accessible on foot from Roppongi.  Unfortunately Hiroo doesn’t have an elevator all the way down to the platform so if you’re accessing this area with a large and heavy stroller – I recommend a walk from Roppongi or entering the area via Azabu-Juban.  (The Azabu-Juban elevator , Exit 4 : around the corner from Tully’s Coffee facing the main road.)

** You may want to combine a Hiroo visit with a trip to Ebisu as well? (Only one subway stop away.)
Post is here for my Ebisu suggestions with children.

Hands down, my favourite thing to do in this area with my children is to go to Arisugawa Park. It is stunning and completely different with every single season.  It has a lovely children’s playground up the top of the hill and a Japanese garden with a large pond down the bottom.  It’s perfect for turtle, duck and carp spotting! There is a public bathroom up the top near the playground equipment and another down near the pond.   Wear mosquito repellant in Summer and Rainy Season.

The park is just 2 minutes walk from Hiroo Station.

Right next to the park is an adorable coffee shop called Nem that opened in 2016.  They make fantastic coffee and hot chocolate and my hubby swears by their pork sandwiches.  I just love their timber interior and “secret” laneway location.

If you’re taking a stroll down the main shopping street in Hiroo and looking for interesting sweet snacks  – walk past Starbucks until you reach Okashi no Machi Hiroo(this means : Sweets City). It’s a little shop full of old school Japanese chocolates, lollies and candy. It’s a great place to buy gifts in bulk – including the “current range” of Kit-Kats.   Check out all the different flavours of gum while you’re there too.

At Christmas time, keep an eye out for these bouncy-castle, wobble-head dwarfes down near Max Brenner chocolate shop.

A good spot for brekkie in this area is Captain Cook Tokyo.  This restaurant is kind of between Hiroo, Aoyama and Roppongi so I think I’ll put the info in my Roppongi post too.
Their restaurant of slogan “British food that is actually delicious” makes me giggle every time.  They are an extremely English-friendly spot and they understand the terms vegetarian and gluten-free!! (which is not widely, truly understood in most of Japan yet.)
They have highchairs for babies and the restaurant takes up two floors so it’s unlikely that you’ll have to queue for a spot.   I love their Shakshuka Baked Eggs, one of their signature dishes.   Breakfast is served until 2:30PM during the week and 3:30PM on weekends.

Aloha Farm Cafe & Sky High Juice bar are easy to spot as they are set up in a two stacked, beautiful, black storage containers. They are near the treehouse cafe and the Okonomiyaki restaurant (both listed below.)
In between the farm cafe and the juice bar is an organic vegetable stand as well.
Sky High Juice does cold press juice and smoothies and Aloha Farm has hawaiian style sushi – which is actually closer to what I am used to seeing in Australian sushi bars.   Cooked meat & veg on brown sushi rice.    The entire menu is listed on their website.   This is a fantastic option if your baby is too young for raw fish or you are not ready for the cold stuff yet either.
It’s really easy to buy a few different pieces and take them over to Arisugawa Park for a picnic while you watch the fish and the ducks.

Dumbo Doughnuts is a new cafe in AzabuJuban for coffee and doughnuts. The instagram trend appears to be placing the doughnut over the top of coffee.  The pink coffee cups are also just so cute. See the bottom of this post for details of the little park across the road.

If you’re looking for amazing gyoza in the area, Tiger Gyoza is known as one of the very best. For that reason, it’s a good idea to arrive as it opens.  The line soon stretches around the corner.   When we have our giant/tricky to fold double stroller I leave it out the front with the parked bicycles and opt for a table by the window (gotta love Japan!).
This restaurant is not about gyoza: they also do ramen, fried rice and fried chicken. (In the evening this restaurant have a vegetarian gyoza option too.)   Warning (a good warning?) for grownups –  the bottle of beer is a BIG bottle of beer!

Another lunch (or dinner) option on the same road as Tiger Gyoza is Homeworks, Hamburger restaurant in Hiroo.
They have high chairs (although not the chairs with the front tray attached) and a little selection of picture books for children to look through while waiting for their food.
They have an English menu.

They offer sandwiches, hamburgers and even have a vegetable plate that includes falafel.
They have a number of vegetarian options.
Kids menu options include: a kids burger, a kids cheeseburger, a kids teriyaki burger, a kids grilled cheese sandwich, a kids organic egg sandwich and a kids ham & cheese sandwich.  (All kids options approximately 800 yen.)

If you’re already in the area with children I’d suggest walking an extra ten minutes to Roppongi’s Robot Park for a play and a stretch. (While you’re there.. how about checking out my post for other Roppongi suggestions here.)  Robo-Robo (aka, Robot) Park is my kid’s favourite Tokyo city park.   It’s just a small piece of land with a rainbow of slides, a few climbing options and a giant roller slide down the hill.  I don’t recommend in the hottest part of Summer as the slides get really hot.  Toilets are at the bottom of the hill across the road.

Another place mentioned in my Roppongi post is Gonpachi which is actually in NishiAzabu right on the edge of Roppongi. This restaurant is also known as “The Kill Bill Restaurant”.  Is it a total tourist trap? Yes! It’s it great fun and very cool? YES!  It’s also very easy with children – for lunch or an early sitting at dinner.  I love their tempura and my kids like the gyoza.

I recommend making a reservation.  It’s a lively,  picturesque setting for a meal.   Don’t rush in – the entrance is filled with signed photos of famous visitors.

Okonomiyaki is a fantastic family friendly option. Okonomiyaki literally means “what you like – cooked!” It’s great for kids because it is visually entertaining as well as being good on the taste-buds.  Okonomiyaki is often described by locals as  “Japanese pizza”  but I would liken it more to a thick omelette filled with meat or veg or seafood.

We love President Chibo in Hiroo for lunch. All seats face the teppanyaki plate (far enough away for little hands to still be safe) and we order a few different kind of okonomiyaki to share and yakisoba.  They also have other options like seasonal vegetables and garlic rice.  Menu is in English as well as Japanese and they do have high chairs (although the kind without the strap so you may want to take a wrap or belt to create a make-shift seatbelt.
I understand that the bonito fish flakes on top of okonomiyaki aren’t everyone’s favourite.  If you don’t want them say “katsuobushi nashi” while it’s being cooked.

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor, next to a burger restaurant.

On a really nice night how about dinner in a treehouse?  Hiroo has a treehouse restaurant above a gorgeous florist and the terrace is very kid-friendly.  The food is mostly sandwiches, soup and salads but it’s a great spot to stop for a light meal, a cuppa or a dessert.

Don’t be surprised if you see this gorgeous cafe pop up in tv commercials and fashion mags around town. It’s the most gorgeous photo backdrop.

It’s no secret that Aloha Table is one of our family favourites. I’ve never seen as many Hawaiian restaurants as I have in Tokyo. I think it’s something to do with the current Hawaiian pancake -boom going on right now.   Apart from the yummy food and wine for adults – the kids plates are so generous and reasonably priced. The kids’ meal comes with a juice, soup and icecream afterwards.
As for me, I’m really into the Kale Spring Rolls and Vegie Gapao.

It is not a beautiful park but if you’ve just finished at a cafe or need a spot for wriggling after a stroller ride, Ajiro Park in Azabu-Juban is a good one.  As always, my kids are crazy for a good swing and a roller-slide. It’s very close to Dumbo Doughnuts.
